Quickly putting the events of the past few days behind him, Walton played catch with his nine-year-old daughter, Camden, in left field. In between throws, he was doing what he loved by teaching her the fundamentals of throwing and catching.

About 48 hours earlier, Walton made perhaps the most important teaching lesson of his seven-year Florida career by suspending three starters just hours before the top-seeded Gators opened the Gainesville Regional with a 1-0 loss against fourth-seeded Florida Gulf Coast.

A 7-1 win against Central Florida and a 6-2 win against Florida Gulf Coast keep the Gators’ season alive for at least another day in the NCAA Softball Regional in Gainesville, Fla.

They had 20 hits and six homers in the two games combined. The 14 hits in the second game was the most since a March 3 win against Gardner-Webb.

The Gators (48-12) must beat South Florida twice — beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday — to advance to an NCAA Super Regional that also would be played in Gainesville’s Pressley Stadium should the Gators achieve the feat.

Junior attacker Kitty Cullen still remembers the dispirited feeling she had during the postgame press conference.

“I remember sitting in this exact same spot last year,” Cullen said, “Just being so upset thinking we could have done this, we could have done that, we could be going to the Final Four.”

Fast forward a year to Saturday’s game and Cullen is sitting in the same position.

Tucker, a tad too slow, couldn’t beat the throw by Auburn right fielder Creede Simpson, who fired a strike to home plate and extinguished any chance of a regular season conference title with the bizarre game-ending double play.

The No. 3 Florida Gators (40-16, 18-12), needing a victory in the series finale vs. the Auburn Tigers (30-26, 13-17) to stay in contention for the title, fell short in a crushing 5-4 defeat in which the Gators held another early lead at Plainsman Park in Auburn, Ala.
