The List (6/21/10)
1. Rest in peace Manute Bol. As a basketball player, Bol was better defensively than you think. As a person, Bol was great.
2. The Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship over the Boston Celtics in a game seven that while not an epic masterpiece was light years better than game six.
3. I’ve been checking out a number of mock drafts leading up to the 2010 NBA Potential Gala. SI.com has the Orlando Magic selecting Oklahoma State guard James Anderson with the 29th pick in the first round. I really don’t know much about Anderson and can’t effectively give my thoughts on whether I think that he’s a good fit for the Magic or not, but when SI starts off by describing him as “not especially impressive defensively or athletically” I find it hard to want to read any more.
4. I watch the NBA draft for two reasons and two reasons only: 1) the suits, and 2) the post-selection interviews.
5. The U.S. team got robbed. Now it’s time for the entire country to move on and start thinking ahead to Algeria. Win and the U.S. moves on. Lose and you can go back to your regularly scheduled lives where soccer only exists on small fields with five-year-old participants.
6. No you weren’t playing a video game this morning. That really was Portugal beating North Korea 7-0 in a World Cup game.
7. It may seem odd to most fans, but the Montreal Canadiens needed to trade Jaroslav Halak. One of the surprise stars of this year’s NHL playoffs, Halak was about to become a restricted free agent and surely would have wanted a hefty pay increase. By moving Halak now when his value is at its highest, the Canadiens could ensure they would get something decent in return. And…
8. Carey Price’s value wouldn’t have been nearly as high. Montreal had to make a decision on which goaltender they would move forward with and due to the salary situation and trade value of each, went with Price. Price has the potential to be something special and has shown it on occasion. If he can just become consistent, the Canadiens trade won’t seem like such a surprise.
9. Not too thrilled about the end result of Florida’s first game in the College World Series. The Gators take on instate rival FSU in game two. Do or die time for Florida. The loser goes home.
10. And finally, some guy I’ve never heard of won the U.S. Open.
