Former Gator arrested on home invasion, robbery charges
Former Florida fullback Eric Rutledge was arrested Friday evening on charges of home invasion with a firearm or other deadly weapon, a first degree felony. Rutledge is also facing charges of conspiracy.
He remained in the Alachua County Jail Sunday morning on a $150,000 bond.
According to Alachua County court records, on June 15 Rutledge and three others were involved in a home invasion in which four victims were held at gunpoint, beaten, and robbed of cash, laptops and marijuana.
Court records state that immediately after the alleged defendants left the home, one of the victims went outside and was able to obtain a license plate from a Chevy Blazer as it was leaving the scene at a high rate of speed.
The car was registered to Shannon Mann, who when contacted by admitted he was involved, police records show. Mann told police that after the robbery he was contacted by Rutledge, who is his cousin, and told the robbery had taken place and where he should meet to obtain his share of the proceeds.
Court records further show that Mann allowed police to search his cell phone, and messages were discovered between he and Rutledge discussing details of the alleged robbery.
According to court records, Rutledge has no prior criminal history.
Rutledge, a Gainesville native, is a graduate of P.K. Yonge who was a Class 1A All-State player who rushed for just shy of 1,500 yards in his junior season. He was one of eight freshman to see action for the Gators in 2004.
Rutledge switched from linebacker to fullback in 2005 and saw action in 36 games in his career. He did not have any carries during the regular season in 2007, but was considered the Gators' top lead blocker. He missed his final game, the 2007 Capital One Bowl, due to disciplinary reasons.
